The celebrity aspect of CelebPoker is comprised of mostly European celebrities, from stage, screen, sports, and music. A surprising number of European athletes in particular play at Celeb Poker, in fact. To most Americans, who make up a sizeable portion (maybe even a majority) of the total online poker player base, most of these names are unfamiliar.
Thankfully, CelebPoker offers more than just the chance to play against a famous person or two to draw action to their card tables. For example, they have an ongoing poker school, which is completely free. They also have a separate casino site that is part of their integrated CelebActive Network where you can play blackjack, baccarat, Chinese poker, roulette, and video poker. Celeb Poker is a PokerRoom skin, though with a smaller selection of games. Still, it's software that I find eminently playable (despite the laughable avatars).
It doesn't seem to get as much action as they tout themselves to have, and I wonder if more American celebrities in attendance, or at least more celebrities familiar to Americans, won't place a few more chips on the table. I'd also like to see more "bounty" type tournaments, an obvious bonus only a site like this can offer. But as the reputed "World's First Interactive Celebrity Poker Room", launched in Jan.'04, they fill a definite niche, and all said and done, I don't think they are doing too bad a job at keeping it filled.
